Enrollment and teachers

  • District count: 588 students on the 10-day count of Aug. 24, 2026, according to the district’s Azalea Middle recommendation. The same document gives the building room for 1,328 students, so it is 44% full.
  • Federal count: 696 students in the 2024-25 school year, with 34 full-time-equivalent classroom teachers, according to the NCES directory. That is about 20 students per teacher.

The state’s 2026 grades file lists all of the school’s students as economically disadvantaged.

State report card

Florida grades every public school A to F on the share of possible points it earns on the measures in the state’s 2026 school grades file: test scores, learning gains and, for middle schools, the share of students passing high school courses or industry certifications. The file sets a C for middle schools at 44% to 56% of points and an A at 64% or more.

School year Grade
2025-26 C (53% of possible points)
2024-25 C
2023-24 C

From the same file, the share of students scoring on grade level on the state tests in 2025-26:

  • English language arts: 42%
  • Math: 45%
  • Science: 48%
  • Social studies: 53%

The middle school acceleration figure, the share passing high school-level courses or certifications, was 88%. The full report card is on the state’s Florida school report cards site.

The move to Boca Ciega

In its Planning for Progress recommendation of Sept. 10, the district proposed moving Azalea Middle to Building 4 on the Boca Ciega High campus in Gulfport for 2027-28, with its own address and separated from the high school. The school would be renamed before the move. The School Board votes at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. As proposed:

  • Students who live northwest of Tyrone Boulevard would be rezoned to Tyrone Middle, and a small part of the Bay Point Middle zone would move to Azalea. The district counts 16 grids and 229 students affected.
  • Bay Point Middle’s medical pathway would move to Azalea for 2028-29, lining up with Boca Ciega’s Center for Wellness and Medical Professions.
  • Azalea Elementary would become a K-8 and move into the current Azalea Middle building in 2028-29.

Students moved only by a boundary change could ask to stay through a Special Assignment Request, without district transportation. Check an address in the proposed zone locator.

Attendance zone and feeder schools

Check any address with the district’s School Zone Locator, or see the district’s middle school zoning map. Zones do not follow city limits.

Of the 153,244 St. Petersburg address points in Pinellas County’s address layer, 24,550 (16%) fall inside the Azalea Middle zone on that map.

The district does not publish a feeder list. Comparing its zoning maps (the middle and high school maps were first drawn for 2012-13; the elementary map is for 2026-27), the city addresses in this zone fall in these zones:

  • Elementary school: Azalea (30%), Seventy-Fourth Street (14%), Fairmount Park (13%), Bear Creek (13%), Gulfport Montessori (11%), Mount Vernon (9%) and Northwest (9%).
  • High school: Boca Ciega (64%), Gibbs (13%), St. Petersburg (10%), Dixie Hollins (8%) and Lakewood (5%).

Programs

  • Academy of Engineering: project-based engineering, electronics, computer-aided design, 3D printing and robotics, with an optional Autodesk Inventor certification. Families apply through the district in January, according to the school’s program page. The district’s magnet guide gives feeder priority to students from Douglas L. Jamerson Jr. Elementary.
  • Creative Arts Academy: performing arts.

Applications for 2027-28 open Jan. 5-15, 2027.
