State projects in St. Petersburg

I-275 widening, north of 38th Avenue N to north of 4th Street N. FDOT is widening I-275 and adding two tolled express lanes in each direction from north of 38th Avenue N to south of Gandy Boulevard, then a second express lane each way from there to north of 4th Street N. Cost: $340 million. Work began Aug. 11, 2025; FDOT estimates completion in late 2030. Southbound lanes between Roosevelt Boulevard (Exit 30) and 38th Avenue N (Exit 25) were shifted toward the median on Jan. 27, 2026. Project page.

4th Street N shared-use path. A path along the west side of 4th Street N from Gandy Boulevard to I-275, expected to be finished in early 2027. Project page.

Pinellas Bayway toll plaza. FDOT is converting the Bayway toll plaza just west of Dolphin Cay Lane S/Landings Drive to all-electronic tolling, a $1.2 million job expected to wrap up this fall. Project page.

Howard Frankland Bridge. The new I-275 bridge to Tampa is done in all but the details: FDOT opened the express lanes, and since Aug. 22, 2026, SunPass tolls are collected around the clock in those lanes only; the general lanes stay free. A 12-foot shared-use path for walkers and cyclists runs nearly seven miles along the north side. The $973.4 million project is due to close out in late 2026. Project page.

The full list is on FDOT’s Pinellas County projects page.

City projects

  • Repaving. The city’s pavement program resurfaces streets, fixes curb ramps and repaints markings each year. See whether your street is on the list on the pavement maintenance map.
  • 31st Street S. A Complete Streets study of 31st Street from 1st Avenue N to Pinellas Point Drive is weighing bike, walking and intersection changes; the city expects the study to finish in late 2026. Project page.

Street closures for events and private work need a city street closure permit, handled by the Police Department.

Pinellas County work

County roads outside the city limits are Pinellas County’s. FDOT’s own Pinellas work farther north includes the U.S. 19 interchanges from Main Street (SR 580) toward Curlew Road in north Pinellas, with night lane closures 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday this week.
