Enrollment and teachers
The federal NCES directory counted 757 students in the 2024-25 school year, with 43 full-time-equivalent classroom teachers. That is about 18 students per teacher. The year before, the count was 791.
The state’s 2026 grades file lists 81.9% of the school’s students as economically disadvantaged.
State report card
Florida grades every public school A to F on the share of possible points it earns on the measures in the state’s 2026 school grades file: test scores, learning gains and, for middle schools, the share of students passing high school courses or industry certifications. The file sets a B for middle schools at 57% to 63% of points and an A at 64% or more.
| School year | Grade |
|---|---|
| 2025-26 | B (59% of possible points) |
| 2024-25 | B |
| 2023-24 | C |
From the same file, the share of students scoring on grade level on the state tests in 2025-26:
- English language arts: 60%
- Math: 54%
- Science: 62%
- Social studies: 79%
The middle school acceleration figure was 86%. The full report card is on the state’s Florida school report cards site.
Attendance zone and feeder schools
Check any address with the district’s School Zone Locator, or see the district’s middle school zoning map. Zones do not follow city limits.
Of the 153,244 St. Petersburg address points in Pinellas County’s address layer, 40,767 (26.6%) fall inside the John Hopkins zone on that map, the most of any middle school.
The district does not publish a feeder list. Comparing its zoning maps (the middle and high school maps were first drawn for 2012-13; the elementary map is for 2026-27), the city addresses in this zone fall in these zones:
- Elementary school: North Shore (37%), Campbell Park (23%), Woodlawn (21%), Melrose (8%), Mount Vernon (5%), Fairmount Park (4%) and Lakewood (2%).
- High school: St. Petersburg (71%), Gibbs (25%) and Lakewood (4%).
The district’s Planning for Progress recommendations, up for a School Board vote at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, do not change the John Hopkins zone. One elementary school in it is affected: Woodlawn would take in part of the John M. Sexton Elementary zone if Sexton closes, and the board has also looked at closing Woodlawn instead.
Programs
The school’s website lists three magnet programs, which families apply to through the district, Jan. 5-15, 2027, for 2027-28:
- Center for the Arts: daily focus classes in dance, instrumental music, theater, vocal music and visual arts. The school calls it a bridge between Perkins Elementary and the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High, according to its arts page.
- Center for Communications, Journalism and Multimedia (CJAM): broadcasting, print journalism, photography and yearbook, with the student-run J.Hop Times.
- Center for Gifted Studies: full-time gifted classes with access to the arts and journalism focus areas.
The district’s magnet guide gives arts applicants from Midtown Academy and Perkins Elementary and journalism applicants from Melrose Elementary feeder priority.
