State report card

Florida grades every public school A to F on the share of possible points it earns on the measures in the state’s 2026 school grades file: test scores, learning gains and, for middle schools, the share of students passing high school courses or industry certifications. The file sets an A for middle schools at 64% of points or more.

School year Grade
2025-26 A (66% of possible points)
2024-25 A
2023-24 A

From the same file, the share of students scoring on grade level on the state tests in 2025-26:

  • English language arts: 72%
  • Math: 65%
  • Science: 64%
  • Social studies: 86%

The middle school acceleration figure was 88%. The full report card is on the state’s Florida school report cards site.

How admission works

Fundamental schools take a structured, traditional approach with clear expectations for students and parents, the district says on its programs page. There is no zone:

  • Families apply online through their Focus parent account. For 2027-28, the initial window is Jan. 5-15, 2027, and offers are accepted Feb. 10-19, 2027. Applications are randomized, so applying early does not help.
  • Students in elementary fundamental programs get feeder priority for a fundamental seat at the next level, according to the district’s magnet guide.
  • Parents must provide transportation to fundamental schools, but the district runs arterial buses, with limited stops on main roads, to Thurgood Marshall in the south county application area.
  • The school’s gifted center lists requirements including behavior standards, homework with parent signatures and mandatory parent attendance at PTA and gifted meetings.

The district’s South County Fair for magnet and fundamental programs is 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Gibbs High.

Programs

  • Center for Gifted Studies: founded in 2009-10, one of three gifted middle school magnets in the county and the only one combined with a fundamental school, according to the school’s gifted studies page.
  • AVID, and a block schedule in which students take eight classes.

The school’s athletics page lists cross country, volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field and flag football.

The district’s Planning for Progress recommendations, up for a School Board vote at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, do not name Thurgood Marshall.

Calendar and bell times

Classes run 9:40 a.m. to 4:10 p.m., according to the school’s bell schedule, which matches the district’s 2026-27 bell times.

From the district’s 2026-27 student calendar:

  • Monday, Oct. 12: no school for students (a possible hurricane make-up day)
  • Wednesday, Nov. 11: no school (a possible hurricane make-up day)
  • Nov. 21-29: Thanksgiving week, no school
