Halloween safety

Simple habits that keep the night safe:

  • Carry a flashlight or glow stick and add reflective tape to dark costumes.
  • Pick face paint over masks that block vision.
  • Walk on sidewalks, cross at corners and stay in groups; younger children go with an adult.
  • Check candy before anyone eats it, and throw out anything unwrapped.
  • Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods from dusk on Saturday, and watch for children crossing between parked cars.

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue also warns against charging lithium-ion batteries, including those in costume lights and e-bikes, on beds or couches, per the city’s recycling page.

One more thing

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, the morning after Halloween, so set clocks back an hour before bed.
