Reporting an outage
Duke Energy lists three ways to report an outage: text OUT to 57801, call 800-228-8485 or report it online. Duke says it does not always know your power is out, so report it even if neighbors are dark too. It also says speaking to a customer service representative will not speed up your restoration, so the text or online report is as good as a call.
Why is your street dark when the next one is lit? Duke explains that storm damage can hit main lines, individual circuits or both, and your home may be on a different main line than your neighbor’s. Sometimes a home needs its own electrical repairs before it can take power again; if you are unsure, call a licensed electrician.
The outage map
Duke’s outage map shows current outages across its service area. Bookmark it before storm season; during a big storm, check it instead of calling.

Downed lines and safety
From Duke Energy:
- Assume every downed line is energized and report it right away at 800-228-8485.
- Stay away from flooded areas and debris; they can hide downed lines.
- Generators: run them outside and plug appliances straight into the generator. Never wire a generator into your breaker box; it can backfeed the lines and injure crews.
- If you leave home during an outage, turn off appliances that were on, or the main breaker.
Portable generators of 10,000 running watts or less are now always exempt from Florida sales tax; see our hurricane prep guide.
Storm hardening
Duke Energy says on its Florida storm-ready page that it is replacing poles, upgrading equipment and using analytics to find the power lines most likely to fail, then moving some of them underground. The aim, in Duke’s words, is a grid that is “more resistant to storm damage.” Questions about work on your street go to Duke at 800-228-8485.
Medical needs
If someone in your home depends on electric medical equipment, plan for an outage before storm season. Pinellas County’s Evacuation Assistance Program (727-551-3822) helps residents who need transport to a shelter, including the special needs shelter at John Hopkins Middle School, 701 16th St. S. Register well ahead of a storm.
After a storm
The city’s Hurricane Center tells residents to plan on three to seven days of uncertainty after a storm and to listen to a battery-powered radio for news on power outages, road closures and other instructions. Report fallen trees and other city problems through the city’s service center or at 727-893-7111, not to Duke.
