What the exhibit is
The city launched Beyond the Rainbow as a photo campaign during Pride Month in June. The exhibit brings those images together in a shared space, the city said.
According to the project page, each participant was photographed against a single-color backdrop. Each backdrop matches one of the 11 colors of the Progressive Pride flag, and the city gives each color a meaning:
- red: life
- orange: healing
- yellow: sunshine
- green: nature
- blue: serenity
- purple: spirit
- black: strength
- brown: resilience
- light blue: trans masc
- pink: trans fem
- white: nonbinary
“St. Pete’s spirit is rooted in creativity, individuality, and the belief that our community is stronger when people can show up as themselves,” said Nathan Bruemmer, the city’s LGBTQ+ liaison. “Beyond the Rainbow celebrates the LGBTQ+ community as an essential part of what makes our city vibrant.”
National Coming Out Day, which the opening marks, has been held every Oct. 11 since 1988.
